Leadership Austin: Can We Build a Beloved Community and Keep Austin Weird?

Wednesday, January 8th 2020

“Our goal is to create a beloved community and this will require a qualitative change in our souls as well as a quantitative change in our lives” – Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Over the last nine years the City of Austin has grown 25% and the region has grown 30% while trying to ‘Keep Austin Weird’. Although this moniker originated nearly 20 years ago as a way to support local businesses what does ‘Keep Austin Weird’ mean today? With this type of growth what values are we wanting to keep as our community continues to grow and reshape ourselves? In celebration of Dr. King’s birthday, we will explore how to build a beloved community for all individuals – those born in Austin, those who moved here ten years ago or those who moved here 20 minutes ago. Building a beloved community in Austin means empowering people of all backgrounds and beliefs to bridge divides and create spaces that are loving and inclusive.
