Meet Our Spring 2024 Intern!

By Blair Waltman-Alexin & Dacia Garcia | Friday, January 26th 2024

Introduce yourself! Tell us what you’re studying and a little about you! Hi everyone, I’m Dacia Garcia! I’m a senior journalism student at UT Austin and I graduate this May with my bachelor’s degree in Journalism. I co-direct the Ramble On podcast for the student publication Drift Magazine and I’m a total audio nerd. In my free time I love to binge watch Survivor and eat pho at my favorite Austin restaurant, 888!

Where did you grow up? I grew up in Edinburg, TX my entire life and I’ll always call the Rio Grande Valley home. I’ve lived in Austin for three years now and I still haven’t found a Mexican restaurant that comes close to the delicious food in the Valley.

What got you interested in storytelling? As a kid, I always found myself trying to escape the limitations of reality and wrote myself into different storylines I wanted to be a part of. Storytelling has always brought me comfort and my time as a journalism student has shown me that I can use storytelling to help others share their lives in a way that feels right to them.

What drew you to Decibel’s community-led journalism initiative? I love that Decibel puts the reins of storytelling in the hands of the community. Decibel really prioritizes getting a story right by connecting with the local community and that’s something I’ve been interested in for some time.

What projects are you excited to learn more about during your internship? I’m most excited to learn about the filming process for the stories Decibel creates since I don’t have too much experience with video production.

If stopping at a coffee shop on the way back from a remote, what’s your beverage of choice? I don’t drink coffee because it gives me WAY too much energy so I’d probably get a chamomile tea with lemon and honey!

Community journalism doesn’t happen without community support.
